We're asking you to take a chance on us.
After all, we take a chance on the kids who have come to us through foster care and adoption. We've allowed our lives to be turned upside down for them, and the children who have entered our homes and our hearts are not guaranteed to stay with us, love us back, or heal, even if we give our all. But we do. Every day.
We are also a growing team of lawyers, social workers, parenting coaches, non-profit leaders, equine therapists, trauma and attachment therapists, business owners, and financial analysts who have come together to support families like ours in San Diego County.
How?
By filling in the gaps. While a variety of individuals and organizations provide specific supports and interventions, San Diego County does not have a central hub to connect ALL foster and adoptive parents with ALL the resources in ONE space. In addition, there are gaps in things like trauma-informed trainings and respite opportunities. And do you know how hard it is to find an opening with a good therapist skilled in attachment issues that takes your insurance?
We aim to do TWO primary things:
1. Develop a website that is a one-stop-shop for foster and adoptive families. Parents should be able to come to the site with a need and connect with the appropriate organization, therapist, specialist, or grant from the resources on our site.
2. Facilitate solutions to the gaps. We do not want to reinvent what another organization is doing well — we first want to connect people to that organization. But if a service is unavailable or offered in a very limited capacity, we will strategize how to provide for that need and make it happen.
We all know that a website like this takes money to create and maintain. It's an ambitious goal, for sure.
We also know that paying people to provide services that either don't exist or do not adequately meet the demand is an expensive endeavor. The people for these jobs are highly trained, uniquely skilled specialists.
We have ONE MORE DREAM:
We would love to provide small grants to foster and adoptive families, so that they can do something out of the ordinary that will either provide rest and build attachment or create lasting memories. This might be a weekend at a seaside hotel, passes to a theme park, a special meal out...whatever they think would be the right thing for their family. For around $500 per family, we think we can do this. Are you able to bless a family in this way?
